Master luthier Robert Brewer Young joins Mattereum to create conservation commons of irreplaceables

Renowned luthier Robert Brewer Young has joined London’s Mattereum as a consultant, conservator and curator of irreplaceables. Robert brings years of unparalleled experience caring for instruments such as Stradivari violins, as well as making signature cellos, violins and violas for some of the world’s most acclaimed musicians. Robert’s passion has extended to charitable work, supplying students, teachers and aspiring classical musicians in need with quality instruments across the world.

Robert Brewer Young said: “The Mattereum ethos provides a unique space in which to develop a contemporary platform for conservation, documentation and cross disciplinary exchange for rare instruments and other irreplaceables. I am grateful to be joining this effort and to work with the insights and invaluable perspectives offered by the Mattereum team.”

Dr James Hester, Mattereum’s Head of Ontology and former Curator of Arms and Armour at the Tower of London, said: “I am very excited to welcome Robert to Mattereum and am delighted to have him as a colleague. His extensive knowledge of fine and antique instruments will be invaluable as Mattereum seeks to establish our Asset Passport as the gold standard for authentication, and wondrous new possibilities such as tokenisation and shared ownership, in this fascinating and important field.”

Antique instruments such as Stradivari violins are a class of objects for which clear provenance is crucial to authentication and valuation. Their complex histories and documentation requirements demonstrate the importance of the full breadth of reliable and secure digital authentication provided by Mattereum’s Asset Passport.
